THE TUDOR PERIOD

DATES: The Tudor period is the period between 1484 and 1603 in England and Wales and includes the Elizabethan period during the reign of Elizabeth I until the end of it. The Tudor period coincides with the dinasty of the House of Tudor in England whose first monarch was Henry VII. (1457-1509) It is preceded by the Late Middle Ages and followed by the Jacobean Era. And the Monarchs of this period are Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.

James VI of Scotland and I of England

-King James VI of Scotland was born on June 19,1567 at Edinburgh Castle. -His parents were Mary Queen of Scots and his second husband Lord Darnley. -He assumed the Scottish throne in 1583, after the abdication of his mother, and after the death of Elizabeth I assumed the English throne in 1603 and was named James I. -James succeed most of his aims in Scotland but faced great difficulties in England, including the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and repeated conflicts with the English Parliament. -Also, with its anti-Catholic reaction, gave James a temporary popularity which soon was gone. His foreing policy , aimed primarly at achieving closer relations with Spain, was also disliked. -He was succeeded by his son Charles, after his death  in 1625, who became king of England and Scotland.

THOMAS MORE Thomas More was born in London, England, on February 7, 1478, although some scholars believe that his date of birth might be 1477. Thomas served as "Henry's intellectual courtier," secretary and confidant, and, in 1523, he was elected speaker of the House of Commons. Thomas More was beheaded on July 6, 1535, for his refusal to accept King Henry VIII as the head of the Church of England. More was beatified in 1886 and canonized by the Catholic Church as a saint in 1935

HENRY VIII

HENRY VIII Henry Tudor was born the 28 of June of 1491 and he was the king of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. He married six times (Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr.), beheading two of his wives who were Anne Boleyn and Catherine. He had three children Mary (his first daughter), Elizabeth and Edward who succeeded him after his death becoming Edward VI. His reign is well known for the English Reformation that Henry started mainly for his desire of divorcing Catherine of Aragon but also because he wanted to have all the power of his country that's why he made himself the Supreme Head of the Chruch in 1534. Edward VII Ø   King Edward VII was born on November 9, 1841 in London. His parents were Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert. Ø   He went through a rigorous  educational program prepared by his parents. He attended Oxford and Cambridge. He had a liaison with an actress and this produced an incredible scandal in the society. Ø   After the death of his father, he had to share some responsibilities with his mother in the reign. Ø   In 1863 he married princess Alexandra of Denmark, with whom he had six children. Furthermore, he had some mistresses. Ø   In 1901 Victoria died and he succeeded the throne. He is also known as the “Uncle of Europe “ since he did some negotiations with countries like France. Besides, he visited Russia. He was a smart man as he was rewarded in art,  science and literature.
