POCAHONTAS.

POCAHONTAS.      Pocahontas  was a Native American woman notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. We do not know much about her childhood, it is said that Pocahontas was born in 1596, and her father, Powhatan, was the king of the tribe.      Pocahontas is also known for the love story among John Smith in 1607 when she saved Smith from being killed when he was captured.            Pocahontas was captured and held for ransom by the English during Anglo-Indian hostilities in 1613. During her captivity, she converted to Christianity and  t ook the name, Rebecca. When the opportunity arose for her to return to her people, she chose to remain with the English. In 1614, she married tobacco planter John Rolfe,   and in 1615 their son Thomas Rolfe  was born. In 1616, the Rolfes traveled to London. Pocahontas was presented to English society as an example of the "civilized savage"  in hopes of stimulating investment in the Jamestown settl
