Oprah Winfrey Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954, born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother.  She is s an American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist. She is best known for her talk show: The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was the highest-rated television program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011 in Chicago.   Dubbed the "Queen of All Media", she was the richest African American of the 20th century North America's first multi-billionaire black person and has been ranked the greatest black philanthropist in American history. The movie critic Roger Ebert persuaded her to sign a syndication deal with King World. Ebert predicted that she would generate 40 times as much revenue as his television show, At the Movies. Twinkies You may know these as the super synthetic, likely non-biodegradable cake snacks — the ones with a shelf life spanning years, if not decades ( okay, maybe just 45 days .)  According to Hostess Cakes , the goodie was invented by bakery manager Jimmy Dewer in 1930. En route to giving a presentation on his idea, Dewer saw a billboard for Twinkle Toe Shoes. With that, the adorable name — and the tasty treat to go with it — was born. 2. Cheeseburger This is about as American as it gets. The concept of the hamburger originated sometime in the late 19th century,  according to the L.A. Times .
